FAO Ray and anyone in NW - found a nice little road whilst out for a pootle tonight

I was going to do my usual quick lap of A628 Woodhead, A6024 to Holmfirth then A635 back home via Ashton tonight. Instead, I turned round at the top of the A6024 at Holme Moss (by the transmitter) and went back down to Woodhead, joined it heading back towards Manchester and chucked a left onto the B6105. It's easily missed when going along Woodhead, but I'm glad I checked it out. I'd had it in mind for a while now. What a cracking little stretch of road! You probably already know it, but I thought I'd flag it up for any of us in the NW who haven't given it a whirl as yet, or any of our mob who end up in the area on a day out. Twisty, rather than fast and flowing, but a great (albeit short) stretch of road. It flows into the A624, where I usually join it on the way to Long Hill. I did Long Hill twice each way and then headed home.

A new road with Long Hill (twice) at the end of it... Perfick evening! Yes

Long Hill was nice and empty when I was up there about 7ish. Here's a linkerooney to the route from Holmfirth to Long Hill:

    http://maps.google.co.uk/maps?f=d&hl=en&geocode=6719287226550915150,53.336150,-1.969300%3B10898218577079672024,53.273810,-1.952660&saddr=A6024,+Holme,+Holmfirth,+West+Yorkshire,+UK&daddr=B6062%2FNew+Rd+%4053.336150,+-1.969300+to:53.261927,-1.923981&mra=dme&mrcr=0&mrsp=2&sz=10&via=1&sll=53.410595,-1.880535&sspn=0.419934,1.19751&ie=UTF8&z=10

Doesn't look much on the map but it's a great little bit of road. Definitely best done in the dry: there was yesterday's run-off from the tops coming onto the road this afternoon, but only a little (enough to dampen the tarmac rather than create a puddle). Wouldn't fancy it in the Winter, mind!

I've only done it the one way - it might be crap on the way back down towards Woodhead (but I doubt it). Dunno whereabouts you're based, but try it from the Woodhead end if you're near enough. Also, try the A6024 up to Holme Moss; but be careful of the blind right-hander at the top.

What's tomorrow's forecast? The alarm may very well be set to avoid traffic... Big Smile

I dont think I've ever done that bit of road DB.I'm in the Alty area and I could do it from either end really.

Its all wet and shit tomorrow by the looks of it but we could meet up one evening tuesday or thursday next week and try it if u want.

I cant do tomorrow either but if thursday was good I might get out too.

I drove on the B6105 yesterday DB and realised that I'd done it before too. That road is a very dodgy road to ride on tbh. Its ok riding through slowly but if u really wanted to go for it then u'd be asking for it.Surprise

The best and the safest roads around is C&F and Longhill IMO.Wink

Re: FAO Ray and anyone in NW - found a nice little road whilst out for a pootle tonight

Yeah, it is a tight one! That's what I meant by "twisty rather than fast and flowing". My defintion of twisty is "riding above 50 would be a deathwish, get it down to around 30 for the bends" Surprise. But that's partly my lack of ability/testicular fortitude. The bonus being that at the end of it is that nice stretch of the A628 and Long Hill, where you get back up to speed. Wink

TBH I'm not a fast road rider (I've seen some people on Long Hill going kerb-to-kerb, TT-style), and I enjoy the tighter, slower roads as much as the fast flowing ones, so for me it broke the ride up nicely. The run-off from the top could be very dodgy on anything other than a sunny day though. I like the twistier sections of the C&F too, but I've had the odd close one with people coming the other way on the wrong side of the road so I ride it like Mother Theresa now!

I don't know if you ever ride "in a spirited fashion" on the A6 Whaley Bridge Bypass, but there have been Kojaks with Kodaks on it the past few times we've been up there. Worth bearing in mind...

few yrs ag I used to be a bit of a straight line hero but now I like the twisties and I dont bother with dual carriage ways any more so I dont need to worry too much about kojaks with kodaks.Big Smile

Same here. The novelty soon wore off. Big Smile I prefer the twisties as I feel more involved in the ride. Just mentioned it as it's part of my route and I constantly get thous blowing my fairings off down there!

you're right DB the novelty of straight line speed does ware off as you learn more about cornering. I'm off to wales tomorow if I get up early enough if not c&f will be the place for me. so if you're around we may run into each other in the car park.

I'm gonna do my absolute best to get up early and go to wales tho and the forecast is dry too.Cool

Re: FAO Ray and anyone in NW - found a nice little road whilst out for a pootle tonight

If you're asking me kwacky the answer is yes I did and oh boy did I have a great ride too. I trailered the bike to Newtown and did the 483 run 3 times and I was absolutely knackered at the end of the 3rd run.

Put bike back on the trailer and listened to good music driving back home. I'd say a fantastic day at the office again and what a brilliant road that 483 is. the more I do it the more flowing it becomes and the more I get addicted to it.

I wanna buy that road and all the surrounding houses and lands on it and turn it into a proper track. How many millions do u reckon I need to do that?

what a concept tho, gated at both ends 20 miles of heaven and riders with VIP invitaions allowed only to get in.Stick out tongue
